Director [Roland Emmerich](/person/roland-emmerich) (Independence Day) and Marco Weber (The Thirteenth Floor) are developing a live-action TV series based on Space Nation Online, a Web3 space opera MMORPG from Space Nation Inc. The series will be developed and executive produced by Emmerich and Weber, according to Variety. The company was founded by Emmerich, Weber and game developers Jerome Wu and Tony Tang to focus on "transmedia IP spanning video games, online content and TV/streaming. Backed by $50 million in funding", Space Nation Online soft launched at the end of September.

Emmerich told [Variety](https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/space-nation-tv-series-roland-emmerich-video-game-1236188105): "We talked about that I have to develop my own [Web3] spaceships, etcetera, etcetera. And so there's a possibility to buy a spaceship I designed — but it's only one of many, many things we offer. What we also want to offer is a TV show. A TV show which shows the origin of this whole situation, because aliens came to Earth, destroyed Earth, and we had to go to space."

Speaking of distribution, Weber said that they want to take an approach that is consistent with the philosophy of the game and its in-game economy. They don't want to sell the IP to a streamer, they might license the rights to a streaming service later. They also want to finance a large part of the budget through the in-game economy.

Space Nation Online is a Web3 space opera MMORPG where players take on the role of ship captains and embark on an adventure around the Telikos Cluster. The game combines Web3 concepts and blockchain technologies. "It prioritizes gameplay, offering a unique gaming experience that sets a new standard for inclusive and engaging interactive entertainment. It is designed to captivate gamers, Web3 early adopters, and sci-fi enthusiasts alike," says Space Nation Inc.
